Two Korean shorts films win at Berlin

Korean short films "PARANMANJANG (Night Fishing)" and "Pu-Seo-Jin Bam (Broken Night)" won at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival held in Germany over the weekend.

The official website of the Berlin International Film Festival announced today that "PARANMANJAN (Night Fishing)," helmed by directors Park Chan-wook and Park Chan-kyong, was awarded the Golden Bear for best short film at the fest's awards ceremony held Saturday.

"PARANMANJANG" tells of a man who begins fishing in the morning while not catching anything till night when a young woman in a white funeral dress appears, calling him.

Another winner that night was "Pu-Seo-Jin Bam (Broken Night)," helmed by Yang Hyo-joo, which took home the jury prize of the Silver Bear.

"Pu-Seo-Jin Bam" is about Kyoung-pyo who works as an insurance fraudster that sets up fake car accidents to claim insurance payments. One day, he gets involved in a real car accident.

The film festival -- considered one of the most prestigious film events in Europe alongside Cannes, Venice and Rotterdam -- showed about 400 movies under several different categories including competition, panorama, forum, generation, German films, Berlinale shorts and retrospective.

Founded in 1951, the Berlin International Film Festival, held this year from February 10 till 20, has been celebrated every February since 1978.
