Balladeer Kim Yeon-woo tops Gaon chart

MBC's music reality show "I'm A Singer" [MBC]

Kim Yeon-woo’s rendition of “If You Are Like Me” on MBC’s singing competition “I’m A Singer” arrived at first place on the weekly Gaon singles chart for the week of May 22 to 28.

The song, originally sung by singer Kim Jang-hoon in 1998, was re-performed by Kim on the Sunday show two weeks ago.

He had to leave the show however, after scoring the lowest mark against six other competitors but the song ended up topping several music charts after that.

The No. 2 and 3 songs on the chart were grabbed by songs from the same show; “Everyone” by Yim Jae-beum and “Swamp” by Kim Bum-soo which were also performed the same week.

Yim came out a winner with the song “Everyone” which sings of companionship, adapted from an English gospel song and originally sung by songstress Yoon Bok-hee who won a grand prize with it at the 1979 Seoul International Song Festival.

Kim Bum-soo managed to pass the contest with a rock version of “Swamp,” a ballad which sings of hopeless love that was first released by singer Jo Kwan-woo in 1994.

On the albums chart, male rock band FTIsland’s third mini-album “RETURN” released on May 24 debuted atop the chart.

“RETURN,” composed of five tracks including title track “Hello Hello,” also celebrates the band’s return to Korea after pursuing their musical career in Japan for the past year.

With the emergence of a new winner, boy band BEAST’s ten-track album “Fiction and Fact” that includes current hit songs "Fiction" and "On Rainy Days," went down a step to land at second place.

Taking the No. 3 spot was “Secret Garden Soundtrack Special” from the SBS TV series “Secret Garden” which surged 32 steps from the previous chart.

The soundtrack, composed of songs by various artists including Baek Ji-young, Sung Si-kyung, Shin Yong-jae, Kim Bum-soo, BOIS, Yoari and even actors Yoon Sang-hyun and Hyun Bin, was one of the top selling soundtracks during the early half of this year thanks to the popularity of the drama which was a fantasy romance about two people in love switching souls.
