Super Junior sells most records in 2010 on Gaon chart
Super Junior sold the most albums last year, according to the estimates by the Korea Music Content Industry Association's (KMCIA) Gaon music chart.
An official in charge of handling the charts told 10Asia on Monday that the 13-member boy group’s fourth album “BONAMANA,” composed of 11 tracks and released on May 13 of last year, took first place in terms of record sales last year.
Girls’ Generation’s second album “Oh,” EP album “Hoot” and their repackaged album “Run Devil Run” successively took second to fourth place, followed by Big Bang members GD and T.O.P’s first duo unit album “GD&T.O.P.” at No.5.
KMCIA on Wednesday will hold a ceremony awarding the aforementioned winners as well as other artists who have ranked atop the chart in terms of most digital downloads.
Attendants of the event will include the new Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choung Byoung-gug, musicians including Super Junior, miss A, G.NA, Kang Seung-yoon and Lee Seung-chul, and key figures from the Korean music industry such as heads of Korea Music Copyright Association (KOMCA), Korea Broadcasting Performers’ Association (KBPA), Korea Association Of Phonogram Producers (KAPP), as well as media personnel.
Gaon's music chart, an integrated Korean pop music chart equivalent to the U.S. Billboard chart, was launched in late February of last year by KMCIA to rank singles and albums according to online and offline sales data provided by major web-based music providers and record distribution companies.
Super Junior, which is known as one of the largest boy bands in the world, debuted in late 2005 with many hit songs such as “Sorry Sorry,” “U” and “Don’t Don” but has been promoting themselves with just 10 members recently due to member Kang-in is serving his mandatory military duties, Kibum focusing on his acting career and Hangeng seeking termination of his contract with SM.
