“Detective K: Secret of Virtuous Widow” maintained its No.1 spot on the weekend box office chart for the second time, according to statistics by the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) from February 4 to 6.

There was also no change in movie rankings, from No.1 to 9, from the previous week.

“Detective K,” starring Kim Myung-min, Oh Dal-soo and Han Ji-min, attracted 1,106,114 audiences during the three-day period after opening in an additional 46 theaters compared to the week before to add up to a total 673 theaters.

The story set in 18th century Korea is about detective K’s (played by Kim) adventure to resolve the mystery behind a serial murder after receiving special order from the king who believes the case is linked with a conspiracy amongst high-ranking government officials.

During the investigation, detective K stumbles upon dog-seller Seo-pil (Oh) who helps him from the attack of an assassin and also meets with a mysterious woman Han Gaek-joo (Han) who seems to hold the key to all the murders.

The movie is based on the 2005-novel “The Secret of Chastity Gate” (translated title) by Kim Tak-hwan.

American film “Gulliver’s Travels" took second place on the box office, after drawing in 564,308 movie-goers during the same weekend at 544 theaters nationwide.

A fantasy-comic adventure starring Jack Black, Emily Blunt and Jason Segel, also based on the 18th century classic of the same name by Jonathan Swift, has been re-made into a modern version in which travel writer Lemuel Gulliver (Black) finds himself washed away to the land of tiny people called Lilliput during his investigation into the waters of the Bermuda Triangle.

Coming in at third was “Battlefield Heroes,” opened in 520 theaters so far, which sold 526,428 tickets during the same period.

The story revisits one of great wars between two ancient kingdoms in 7th century Korea: Silla which ruled the lower half of the Korean Peninsula and Goguryeo the upper half and make humorous parody of common soldiers conscripted to war against their will.
