Official U.S. poster of Korean film "Mother" [Magnolia Pictures]

Veteran actress Kim Hye-ja has been named best actress by the prestigious Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA), making her the first Korean actor to win the honor from the committee.


According to the official website of LAFCA, the actress won the award for her role in director Bong Joon-ho's drama "Mother" while Bong was honored the runner-up for best foreign-language film.

Other notable mentions were “The Social Network” for best picture, Colin Firth as best actor for “The King’s Speech,” “Toy Story 3” for best animation film and critically acclaimed actor Paul Mazursky for career achievement.


Founded in 1975, the LACFA recognizes the best in film both on and off screen. The association also pays tribute to industry veterans and acknowledges upcoming talents as well as hosting various film events in Los Angeles.

LACFA's awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on January 15 of next year.

"Mother," which also stars Hallyu star Won Bin, is about the mother's fight to prove that her mentally challenged son did not commit a murder.


The thriller flick won rave reviews after making its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last spring and was presented at numerous film events as well as winning a handful of awards at international and local festivals for best actress, actor, director and film.
