Korean short film "Ghost" to compete at Festival de Cannes

Korean short film "Ghost" will compete against several international pictures at the Festival de Cannes next month, according to the official website of the fest on Wednesday.

"Ghost," helmed by Dahci Ma, the nickname of Korean director Lee Jung-jin, will compete alongside eight other short flicks for the Palme d'Or in the category of short films at the 64th annual Festival de Cannes to be held from May 11 to 22 this year.

The winner of the competition, composed of unreleased work, will be decided and announced by famed French filmmaker Michel Gondry during the closing ceremony of the film fest on May 22. The winner of the Palme d'Or last year was "Barking Island" by Serge Avedikian.

The short film segment was created in 2004 to offer young producers and directors the opportunity to present their works and engage in meetings and initiatives that will help their future careers. It brings together a large variety of cinematographic concepts, differing in style, genre, length and national original.

Meanwhile, feature films "The Day He Arrives" helmed by Hong Sang-soo, "Arirang" by "Kim Ki-duk and "Yellow Sea" directed by Na Hong-jin will be screened under the noncompetitive Un Certain Regard category and director Lee Tae-ho's short flick "In Front of The House" and helmer Moon Byoung-gon's pic "Bul-Myul-Ui-Sa-Na-Ie" will be screened at Critics' Week.

Known as one of the world's oldest and prestigious film festivals, Festival de Cannes was founded in 1946 in the resort town of Cannes in the south of France.

This year American actor, director and producer Robert De Niro will be President of the Jury, Korean director Lee Chang-dong will preside the Un Certain Regard category, French actress Melanie Laurent will be the mistress of the ceremonies, Serbian auteur Emir Kusturica will preside over the jury for Un Certain Regard and Korean director Bong Joon-ho will be the President for the Camera d'or Jury.
