The 12th Jeonju film fest to kick off April 28

The 12th Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) is set to kick off next month at Jeonju's Moak Hall.

The event, which will take place for nine days starting April 28 till May 6, was organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Jeollabukdo Provincial Government and Jeonju City.

This year's fest will feature 190 films (131 features and 59 shorts) from 38 countries, and the movies will be screened under six different categories including JIFF Project, Competition, Cinemascape, Cinemafest, Stranger Than Cinema and Focus On.

The festivities will open with Iranian screenwriter and film director Asghar Farhadi's picture "Nader and Simin, A Separation," the winner of this year's Berlin International Film Festival's Golden Bear award, and close with JIFF's winner in the competition for Korean features.

Three shorts by non-Asian directors Jean Marie Straub, Claire Denis, and Jose Luis Guerin will be shown as part of the Jeonju Digital Project, an annual project for three selected directors to each produce a 30-minute film which represents contemporary European Cinema.

This year's Masterclass, held from May 1 to 3, will include sessions with director Claire Denis, cinematographer Kim Woo-hyoung and film critic Noel Burch, while Korean actor Jung Il-woo and actress Kim So-eun have been appointed the promotional ambassadors for JIFF.

First launched in 2000, the Jeonju International Film Festival focuses on various aspects of the industry including digital, independent and art films. It is one of the main annual film festivals in Korea alongside the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival.
