“Detective K” debuts on top of box office
Korean film “Detective K: Secret of Virtuous Widow” debuted on top of the local box office, according to the estimates of the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) for the weekend of January 28 to 30.
“Detective K,” starring Kim Myung-min, Oh Dal-soo and Han Ji-min, drew in a total 621,110 viewers during the three-day period after opening last Thursday in 627 theaters nationwide.
The story, set in 18th century Korea, is about secret detective K's (played by Kim) adventure to resolve the mystery behind case of serial murder which the king believes is linked with the conspiracy of high government officials.
Opening on the same day was Hollywood’s fantasy-comic adventure “Gulliver’s Travels” which landed at No.2 on the latest box office chart after attracting 475,194 movie-goers in 581 theaters nationwide.
Starring Jack Black, Emily Blunt and Jason Segel, the story based on the 18th century classic tale of the same title by Jonathan Swift, has been re-made into a modern version in which travel writer Lemuel Gulliver (Black) finds himself washed away to the land of tiny people called Lilliput during his investigation into the waters of Bermuda Triangle.
Third on the chart was local film “Battlefield Heroes” which sold a total 321,644 tickets after opening in total 507 theaters last Thursday as well.
The film set in the times of 7th century Korea, revisits the military confrontation between the two ancient kingdoms of those times: Silla which ruled the lower half of the Korean Peninsula and Goguryeo the upper half.

Other films that appeared on the top 10 of the box office chart last weekend were: sports drama “Glove,” spy thriller “Shanghai,” super hero action “The Green Hornet,” animation “Megamind,” suspense action “The Town,” comic fantasy “Hello Ghost,” and animation “Garfield’s Pet Force.”
