K-pop idols Girls' Generation's first full-length Japanese album has topped Japan's prestigious Oricon weekly chart, according to their agency SM Entertainment.


On Tuesday, SM announced in a press release that Girls' Generation album "GIRLS' GENERATION" has sold over 232,000 copies during its first week of going on sale since June 1, making it the first time in Oricon history for an international girl group's first full-length release to reach the No. 1 spot on the weekly chart.

"GIRLS' GENERATION" had also made its debut atop Oricon's daily album chart, as well as receiving over 500,000 pre-orders.


The girls are currently on their nationwide concert tour in Japan which kicked off on May 31 and will head off to other cities including Tokyo, Osaka, Saitama, Hiroshima, Nagoya and Fukuoka till July 18.

The girls will also take part in “MTV VIDEO MUSIC AID JAPAN,” one of the biggest music festival in the country set to in Chiba, Tokyo on June 25.


The group, composed of members Taeyeon, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Sunny, Jessica, Seohyun, Yoona, Yuri and Sooyoung, is currently one of the most well-known female idol groups in Asia which made their debut in Korea in 2007.

They expanded their careers into Japan in August of last year where they have enjoyed much success, becoming the first Korean girl group to place No. 1 on the Oricon chart and wining several gold disc status for selling over 100,000 copies for their albums.
