Girls’ Generation’s “Gee” wins double platinum in Japan
Korean idol group Girls’ Generation has won double platinum status in Japan with their hit song “Gee.”
According to data for March posted on the official website of Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), the nine-member Korean idol group achieved double platinum status under the category of ringback tone last month after receiving over 500,000 downloads.
Under RIAJ's criteria, music content that sells over 100,000 copies are certified Gold, 250,000 as Platinum and one million as Million.
“Gee,” one of Girls’ Generation’s mega-hit songs was first released in Korea as the title track to the group’s first mini-album in January 2009.
The album was released as their second single album in Japan in late October last year and certified gold disc status by RIAJ after selling over 100,000 copies.
The song was even used as the song for the group’s first Japanese commercial “e-ma Nodoame” which is a well-known cough drop in the country.
Girls' Generation, which is one of the most well-known female idol groups in Asia, made their debut in Korea in 2007 under SM Entertainment with their first album "Into the New World" and has since produced a several hit songs including "Gee," "Genie" and "Oh!"
They expanded their careers into Japan in August of last year where they have enjoyed much success, becoming the first Korean girl group to place No. 1 on the Oricon chart and wining several gold disc status for selling over 100,000 copies for their other albums including first single “Genie” and their DVD “少女時代到 ~日記念盤~New Beginning of Girls' Generation.”
