U.S. fantasy action “Thor” took over Korea's weekend box office during the first weekend of May, according to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on Monday.


“Thor,” starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins, drew in a total of 543,075 viewers at 567 theaters nationwide after opening in theaters last Thursday.

The film, which is based on a famous Marvel Comics series, is story about the powerful god of thunder named Thor who, as punishment for his arrogance, has been cast out from the realm of gods to live among humans. He then finds himself protecting humans as his rival brother Loki launches an attack on earth to get rid of him.


The previous winner “Fast Five” went down a step to take second place on the chart this time, after attracting 312,165 audiences in 476 theaters during the same period.

“Fast Five,” an action blockbuster starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster and Dwayne Johnson which opened two weeks ago, is the fifth of the series to “The Fast and the Furious” franchise whose stage for a wild chase takes place in Brazil this time.


Korean film “The Suicide Forecast” was pushed back from second to third place as well on the latest chart, after bringing in 138,039 people to 371 theaters for the past three days.


“The Suicide Forecast” a humane comedy starring Ryoo Seung-bum, Sung Dong-il and Park Chul-min, is about an insurance company salesman who tries to persuade his existing clients with possibility to commit suicide for various reasons, to cancel the life insurance he had forced on them, by trying to make them more hopeful of their lives.

Other films listed from fourth to 10th place on the latest weekend box office chart were “Meet The In-Laws,” “In Love and the War,” “The Last Blossom,” Sunny,” “Officer of the Year,” “Mao’s Last Dancer,” and “Gnomeo & Juliet” in that order.
