Dressed in Colorful Clothes, Beautifully Coordinated Mind

과거, 작가는 사실적인 묘사에 전력하는 작품으로 활동해오다가 신명나는 소제를 찾던 중 부드럽고 섬세한 감성을 표현해 낼 수 있으면서, 화려한 장식과 유기적인 형태에서 여성성을 강조해 보일 수 있는 일상적인 소재를 발견하게 됩니다. 그것은 옷장에서 자신의 체취가 묻어있는 화려한 옷을 하나하나 꺼내 옷과 옷감의 패턴을 캔버스위에 그려내는 것입니다. 이와 같은 작가의 작업은 단순히 옷에 대한 정교한 묘사에만 집중하지 않고, 그리기 과정에서 느껴지는 옛 기억과 순간순간의 느낌들을 바탕과 옷 주변을 채워나가고 있는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 그래서인지 원색적인 색상과 그와는 대비되는 중후한 분위기의 무채색과 함께 화면에 어우러져, 풍부한 톤이 형성되고 몽환적이고 환상적인 내면의 풍경이 드러납니다.

In the past, Lim used to concentrate on realistic depictions. Then, she discovered mundane materials that can express soft and delicate sentimentality and emphasize femininity in glamorous decorations and organic shapes while looking for interesting materials. She takes out colorful clothes that still carry her scent from her closet and draws their patterns and textures on the canvas. The artist's work is not simply focused on depicting the clothes elaborately, but she also fills the negative space around the clothes with the images of her past memories and instant feelings. That is probably why she combines primary colors with contrasting monotonous tones to create rich tones and dreamy and fantastic landscapes.

또한, 임혜영 작가는 작품에서 사물과 작가 사이에서 관계하는 내면의 작용과 심리를 작품에 담아 보여주고 있습니다. 천이라는 소재로 된 옷은 그 물성을 생각해 보았을 때, 견고한 지지대의 역할이 없이는 그 모양이 변화되기 쉽습니다. 하지만 작가의 작품에 등장하는 옷들은 인물에 착용되어진 모양 그대로 표현됨으로서 현실성을 벗어난 초현실적인 구성들이 작품에 두드러집니다. 그 예로 화면 가득 메워진 옷과 옷감의 패턴위에 하나의 작은 원피스를 한 귀퉁이에 그려 넣거나, 단추가 자연스럽게 풀려 벌어진 블라우스 안쪽에 붉은 양귀비꽃이 배치하고, 가슴 쪽 안감에서부터 한 송이의 꽃이 화면전체로 화려하게 피어있는 것을 작품에서 볼 수 있습니다. 이를 통해 작가는 작가의 주관적 관념을 적극적으로 사물관계에 끌어들임으로서 내면의 모습과 여성의 열정, 독립성 등을 작품에 상징적으로 구현해 내고 있습니다.

Lim also shows the introverted actions and psychology between her and the objects. Fabric clothes, considering their material properties, are likely to change in shape without a durable support. However, the clothes in Lim's work are expressed as if they are worn on a person to create surreal compositions. For example, she would draw a small dress in one corner of the composition that is filled with the patterns of clothes, place a red opium-poppy inside an unbuttoned blouse, or a flower colorfully blooming from the lining inside the chest. By doing so, she actively brings her subjective concepts into her relationships with objects to show her introversion, feminine passion, and independence allegorically.

그리고 임혜영 작가는 옷이 놓인 위치와 방향에 따라 변화된 대상의 흥미로운 형태 그리고 옷에서 볼 수 있는 무늬들과 디자인의 재미있는 요소들을 파악하고 심미적 상상력을 펼쳐 전달하는 작업들 또한 병행하고 있습니다. 작품을 보면 옷에 대한 다양한 시각적 표현에 대한 깊은 연구의 흔적들을 볼 수 있는데, 작품에 표현된 옷감의 패턴에는 회화적 요소와 자연적인 것, 인공적인 것을 비롯해 추상성과 구상성이 함께 공재되어 있습니다. 가령 각각의 종류의 패턴들이 겹겹이 쌓아 옷의 모양이 불분명한 색면 추상과 같은 구성하고 있거나, 펼쳐진 큰 원피스의 원단디자인으로 여러 종류의 옷들이 아기자기하게 그려져 채워진 모습, 천위에 그려진 꽃들만을 화면전체에 등장시키는 방법들을 작품에서 볼 수 있습니다. 이것은 작가의 상상력과 아이디어로 만들어낸 신선한 구성으로서 작품을 보는 이에게 대상의 새로운 시각과, 흥미로운 볼거리를 제공합니다.

Lim also identifies the interesting shapes, patterns, and fun design elements of the clothes according to their location and direction and spreads her wings of aesthetic imagination. Her pieces show the outcomes of her in-depth study on the various visual expressions of clothes and the patterns of clothes mix painterly elements, natural elements, artificial elements, abstraction and concreteness. You could find each kind of patterns piled in layers to form irregularly shaped color of the abstract, the compositions filled with various kinds of clothes based on the design of a big dress, or the compositions filled only with the flowers from the fabric. These are creative compositions that incorporate the artist's imagination and ideas and provide the viewers with new perspectives and interesting items to see.

임혜영 작가의 작업은 "옷에 마음을 놓다"라는 그림의 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 옷을 탐미하데 그치지 않고, 캔버스 위에 다채로운 옷을 그리는 과정에서 또 다른 자신에게 옷을 입혀 주고 있는데, 다시 술회해 보자면 화면은 자신의 분신과도 같은 대상이자 마음을 대변하는 창문이 되어 그 안에서 자신의 삶을 진솔하고 아름답게 코디하고 있는 것입니다. 새롭게 진행하고 있는 근작에서의 눈에 띄는 변화는 작품에 적극적으로 여성을 등장시키고 원색의 꽃무늬로 발랄하고, 화려하게 장식된 옷들이 간결하게 묘사되었다는 점입니다. 이 여성은 화면아래에서 반쯤 감긴 눈으로 바탕에 시선을 머무르고 있는데, 이 바탕에는 바로 다양한 문양의 옷들이 펼쳐져 있습니다. 그래서 마치 삶의 희로애락을 간직한 여인의 이야기가 화면 곳곳에 펼쳐져 있는 것 같이 느껴집니다.

Lim's work, as represented by the title of one of her paintings, "Mind on Clothes," is not just about exploring the clothes, but she dresses up the other ego of hers while drawing various clothes on the canvas. In other words, the compositions are her clones and the windows to her heart within which she can coordinate her life honestly and beautifully. A noticeable change in her newer piece is that she actively incorporates a woman with her work and depicts lively clothes with floral patterns in primary colors and colorful ornaments concisely. This woman is on the bottom of the composition and staring at the background with her half-closed eyes, and the background is filled with clothes with various patterns. It feels as if the composition is filled with the story of a woman who cherishes the joy, anger, love, and entertainment of her life.
