Josh Brolin to star in "Oldboy" U.S. remake

Hollywood actor Josh Brolin has been set to play the main lead in the U.S. remake of Korean auteur Park Chan-wook's "Oldboy."

The news was carried by Hollywood entertainment website Deadline Hollywood on Monday (U.S. time), just days after reports said Christian Bale was offered the same villain role in the redo of the thriller from 2003.

Originally played by actor Choi Min-shik, Brolin will play the role of a man who without explanation, is held in solitary confinement for 15 years and seeks to take revenge on those who destroyed his life when he is released.

The film, set to go into production starting March, will be helmed by famed director, producer, writer and actor Spike Lee, the script adapted by Mark Protosevich who will also co-produce, and produced by Roy Lee and Doug Davison via Vertigo Entertainment with Lee’s 40 Acres & A Mule.

Brolin, 43, has appeared in numerous movies since playing his first noted role in movie "The Goonies" in 1985.

He has played many villainous roles in particular including in Quentin Tarantino-Robert Rodriguez directed "Planet Terror" (2007), the Coen brothers' Academy Award-winning film "No Country for Old Men" (2007), Gus van Sant's "Milk" (2008) and Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" (2010).

Most recently, he wrapped up filming of "Men in Black 3" with Will Smith and is set to start working on Warner Bros' "Gangster Squad."
