KBS TV series "The Slave Hunters" [KBS]

A total of five Korean TV programs have made into the final list works competing for gold at the 2011 New York TV & Film Awards, according to the official website of the prestigious awards ceremony.


The five finalists are “The Slave Hunters” (Mini-Series) and “Musical Documentary: Moonlit Night in Seoul” (DocuDrama) by KBS, “Tears of Amazon Tristes Tropiques” (Cultural Issues) and “Lion Queen” (Nature & Wildlife) by MBC and “Story of Seung-il - What It Means To Live” (Family Programs) by SBS.

The results will be disclosed by early March at the latest while the awards ceremony is set to take place in Las Vegas on April 12.


“The Slave Hunters,” a 24-part mini-series which aired in the early half of last year tells a story about slave hunter Dae-gil who makes a living by tracking down runaway slaves. The drama was recognized for its vivid portrayal of the lives of common people in 17th century as well as its high-quality cinematic technique. The drama was named the best drama series at the 2010 Asian TV Awards last year.

“Musical Documentary: Moonlit Night in Seoul,” which was aired last September, was recognized for its brilliant editing of its scenes, bringing together a live documentary of young people trying to survive in Seoul, and scenes from the musical play "Ppallae" (translated as “Washing Clothes”) that deals with a similar story.


“Tears of Amazon Tristes Tropiques” is the second to the series that warned of a possible environmental disaster by looking into the lives and the ecosystem within Amazon while “Lion Queen” described the wonders of nature by taking a close look into the life of a lioness since birth.


“Story of Seung-il - What It Means To Live,” a human documentary, looked into the meaning of life through the life of former pro-league basketball coach Park Seung-il who has been enduring Lour Gehrig’s disease for the past eight years.
