Famed Chinese actress Gong Li will come to Korea to promote her latest film, according to the film's Korean distributor Daisy Entertainment on Friday.


A press release by Daisy explained that Gong Li is set to visit Korea on January 23 for a press conference and red carpet event to promote her new film “Shanghai” (2010) set during World War II that portrays love and dark schemes among nations which lead up to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Gong Li will play main female character Anna, the wife of a powerful mafia boss in Shanghai who, at the same time, works as one of the resistance fighters to protect her country from Japan’s attack.


The actress, as quoted by the press release, said she has much interest in Korean culture and films and is delighted to visit the country in time with the opening of her film set for January 27.

Gong Li debuted through maestro Zhang Yimou’s film “Red Sorghum” in 1987 and has since appeared in many prominent Chinese films including "Raise the Red Lantern” (1991), “The Story of Qiu Ju,” (1992), “Farewell My Concubine” (1993) as well as Hollywood film “Memoirs of Geisha (2005)" for which she has won numerous awards.

She changed her nationality to Singaporean after marrying a Singaporean husband in 2008.
