[INTERVIEW] SunnyHill - Part 1
Interview with SunnyHill
My name is Jang Hyun. My given name is Kim Jang-hyun.
I was born on July 16, 1985 and I have an older sister.
I am the leader as well as the only male member of SunnyHill. Being the only male member has its ups and downs though I have never thought it would be great to have another guy in the group. The other members are all younger females so I would have to compete with the other guy member. (laugh)
I used to b-boy when I was in middle school. I used to have a real timid personality but I became extroverted once I started to dance. During lunch time, I pushed my desk to the back of the room and danced and everyone in the whole school would come to see me. Some of my special moves was the windmill, thomas and head spin. I was kind of popular in Incheon. (laugh)
However, I wasn't extremely popular when I was in school. I was dancing all the time and the main reason was that I went to an all-boys middle and high school...(laugh)
My dream of becoming a singer became more concrete after I took part in Mnet's show "Battle Shinhwa." I had had the vague idea of wanting to become a singer since I only liked listening to pop music.
Lately, I have come to want to learn how to play instruments. Originally, I knew how to play the keyboard and I learned how to play the contrabass a bit to make our album. But now I want to be better. Deejaying equipment are considered musical instruments so I want to test out the various tools.
Recently, I've been listening to the album from this electronica group called Safri Duo, originally from Denmark. And I like listening to electronica music that has more of a rock element to it.
Someday, I would like show my deejaying skills or put on a difficult performance on stage. Just like how Daft Punk holds their shows in a pyramid shaped hall.
I learned how to do magic tricks on my own and it has become my talent. My best trick is to figure out what card the person chose from the deck without looking. (Seung-a: The look his eyes give off changes whenever he performs magic tricks. They twinkle.) Would you like to see a trick?
I can't really tell but the members of my group tell me that they think it's funny how the tone of my voice stays consistent whether I'm joking or am angry. Am I really like that? (Mi-sung: He uses the same tone when he gives a compliment and when he is pointing out our mistakes.)
But when we drink I start acting cute. I call the C.E.O of our company hyung (word referring to an older guy used by younger men). (laugh)
If you look at the cover of our album, it looks as though Mi-sung and I are of the same height but I'm actually taller! Mi-sung was wearing these really high heels which made it seem like she is really tall. I'm getting all riled up. (laugh)
The fans believe that I have a crazy presence because I appear in all the pictures with the other members but don't perform on stage. The fans also made this photoshopped picture with my face and juB's hairstyle. The members were marveling at how pretty I was and said that I ranked No. 1 in terms of appearance in our group!
In that sense, I feel that I rank No. 0 in our group? (laugh)

I was born on April 13, 1986. I have two younger sisters. One is two years younger than me and one that is eight years younger than me. My youngest sister is a junior in high school and promotes SunnyHill while hiding the fact that she is my sister. She goes around asking her friends if they heard about SunnyHill and tell them that they should listen to our songs because we're good. (laugh) She's so cute. She also tells me which member that her friends think is the prettiest.
I can never forget the day that I officially became a member of SunnyHill. I was extremely anxious even while we were practicing and I began to dance because I was so happy like I was going to fly away when Kota and I were chosen as members.
During my school years, I had enough leadership to lead groups or my class. I was extremely active and so playful that I even joked around with the teachers. (laugh)
My dream was to become a singer but my parents were strongly against it so I majored in aviation tourism. I stayed in the dorms studying really hard to become a flight attendant when one day I was so frustrated that I wrote my problems on an Internet community site. I posted a comment saying, "I want to become a singer but I entered college because my parents were against it. What should I do?" and there were a number of replies saying that I should go for it. That was when I dropped out of school and went to auditions.
And since then, it took me six years to make my debut. My parents let out a sigh everytime they saw a flight attendant on TV pushing around her bag because I didn't make my debut even though I had passed the auditions. I endured through the six years before my debut because I wanted to show my parents that I could make it. Now, I feel very content because my parents are the happiest [about me making my debut].
I was one that said the opening line "Ladies and gentleman~" just like an in-flight announcement for our song "Let's talk about." What you learn comes to use some day. (laugh)
And for its lyrics, Kota wrote the first verse and I wrote the second. The second verse of the song says "Girl groups are the latest trends and C.E.Os that look for girls are bad!" That was Seung-a's idea. She was worried thinking that the lyrics were too strong but I liked it. I told her 'Bravo!' It was really original. That's why I always call Seung-a when I can't think of things to write about for lyrics. (laugh)
I worked really hard when I was learning how to write rap. Once, composer Lee Min-soo asked me if I was writing in my diary. I was really hurt by his comment! My raps were turned down several more times but I wrote the lyrics for the song "Marionette" for this album. The lyrics may seem poetic but it's not and it may seem like a novel but it's not. It was really hard writing those lyrics. Once again I called Seung-a for help. (laugh)
A lot of people talk to me about my height. I also saw some comments online saying "Exactly how tall is Mi-sung?" I only look tall because there is a height difference between me and the other members. Honestly, I'm only 167 centimeters. I'm not taller than Jang-hyun. (laugh)
