“Sunny” shines atop weekend box office
Korean film “Sunny” debuted atop Korea’s weekend box office chart during the first weekend of May, according to the results shown on the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS) on Monday.
“Sunny" entered the box office at No. 1 after drawing in a total 172,632 viewers since opening in 532 theaters nationwide on May 4.
The film starring Yoo Ho-jeong, Sim Eun-kyeong, Jin Hee-kyeong and Kim Min-yeong, is a story that looks back at the youthful moment of seven girls through middle-aged women who get in touch after 25 years.
Second on the chart was a French-American action thriller “Source Code” which opened the same day and attracted 159,183 movie-goers at 489 theaters during the three-day period.
“Source Code,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Vera Farmiga, deals with the mission surrounding a future-oriented computer program called Source Code which creates an alternate reality allowing one to visit the past to change the future, namely disastrous accidents.
U.S. fantasy action “Thor,” which ruled the box office chart the previous week, fell back two slots to settle at third place, having sold a total of 121,325 tickets in 509 theaters on the second week of its premiere.
Starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins, the film based on a famous Marvel Comics series, is a story about powerful god of thunder named Thor who has been cast out from the realm of gods to live among humans as punishment for his arrogance, then finds himself protecting humans as his rival brother Loki launches an attack on earth to get rid of him.
Other films listed from fourth to tenth place on the latest weekend box office chart were “Officer of the Year,” “Fast Five,” “Crayon Shin-chan: Super Dimension! The Storm Called My Bride,” “Meet The In-Laws,” “Inazuma Eleven 3: Challenge the World - The Ogre Kicks Off,” “The Suicide Forecast” and “Water For Elephants.”
