Kim Ki-duk "Arirang" tops Cannes' Un Certain Regard

Korean director Kim Ki-duk won the top prize under the Un Certain Regard category at the 64th Cannes Film Festival over the weekend.

According to the official website of the prestigious film fest on Monday, director Kim's movie "Arirang" was awarded the Prize of Un Certain Regard Ex-aequo on May 21.

Kim shared the prize with German auteur Andreas Dresen for his film "Stopped on Track," about a dying man's last months and his wife's attempts to cope.

"Arirang," helmed by and starring Kim who plays three personas, is a one-man show on the timeline of his own life in the movie industry as he reflects on the 15 feature films that he has directed as well as the people that he has encountered.

Meanwhile, director Son Tae-gyum's film "YA-GAN-BI-HANG (FLY BY NIGHT)" came in third place under the Cinefondation category, which was headed by French auteur Michel Gondry.

"YA-GAN-BI-HANG (FLY BY NIGHT)" is about a boy whose only family is his older brother that has a sexual encounter with an older man for money. The film stars actors Cho Min-ho, Chun Shin-hwan and Son Hyun-woo.

Known as one of the world's oldest and prestigious film festivals, Festival de Cannes was founded in 1946 in the resort town of Cannes in the south of France.

This year the festival took place from May 11 to 22 while American actor, director and producer Robert De Niro was President of the Jury, Serbian director Kusturica presided over the jury for Un Certain Regard, French actress Melanie Laurent was the mistress of ceremonies and Korean director Bong Joon-ho was the President for the Camera d'or Jury.
