"Dong Yi" takes over "Rich"

MBC TV series "Dong Yi - Jewel in the Crown" made noticeable progress in ratings this week, beating out KBS' “The Birth of the Rich” from the top spot of dramas aired on Monday and Tuesday nights.

According to statistics released by TNS Media Korea on Tuesday, the prime time show jumped in viewership ratings by three percent from its previous episode to 17.2 percent, the highest figure the show has seen since its premiere late last month.

AGB Nielsen Media Research reported that the show collected ratings of 17.9 percent, gaining 2.1 percent from the previous week.

“The Birth of the Rich,” starring Lee Bo-young and Ji Hyun-woo, had been in the lead till last week with ratings in the 11 to 17 percent range.

"Dong Yi," a historical epic helmed by famed director Lee Byung-hoon whose previous works including "Jewel in the Palace" and "Heo Jun," stars top Korean actors Ji Jin-hee and Han Hyo-joo.

The show is about the life of Dong Yi who grows up to be Choi Suk-bin, a consort of King Sukjong and the mother of King Youngjo during the Chosun Dynasty.
