[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Hansol Paper announced on the 17th that it will supply eco-friendly paper packaging containers to 'Baemin Sanghoe,' a food ingredient shopping mall operated by Baedal Minjok.
The containers supplied by Hansol Paper to Baemin Sanghoe for holding food such as rice or soup are called 'Terabas.' Along with supplying Terabas, Hansol Paper plans to expand the range of eco-friendly products to various items such as takeout paper cups in the future.
Recently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as people spend more time at home and delivery demand increases, the use of disposable containers such as plastic has surged, leading to growing consumer demand for eco-friendly delivery container products. Hansol Paper's Terabas is expected to meet these consumer needs.
Terabas, meaning 'containers that hold nature,' is an eco-friendly paper container product applying PE (polyethylene) free technology in line with the global trend of reducing plastic use. Unlike conventional paper containers coated with PE, a plastic-based component, Terabas uses a water-based coating solution developed independently by Hansol Paper, making recycling easier.
Although PE-free technology is eco-friendly, it has been difficult to apply to food and beverage containers or cups due to technical challenges such as waterproofing, high-speed molding, and heat resistance. However, Hansol Paper has overcome these technical limitations through years of research and development and has expanded its application to various paper products.
Terabas has been verified for safety as a food packaging container meeting global standards through certifications from the Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). It has also obtained the eco-label certification (EL606) from the Ministry of Environment.
Following the development of 'Protego,' an eco-friendly paper packaging material that can replace plastic film packaging in 2019, Hansol Paper plans to lead the eco-friendly materials market by commercializing Terabas paper containers through this contract.
