Seorak Hyanggi Road, developed by Sokcho City in Gangwon Province, has surpassed 500,000 cumulative visitors in just about 20 months since its opening, solidifying its position as a key hub for revitalizing tourism in the Seorak-dong area. This achievement is attributed to the continued increase in tourism demand following the road's opening, as well as the tourism environment improvement projects carried out throughout Seorak-dong.
Seorak Hyanggi Road serves as the central axis of local tourism, attracting visitors year-round with features such as a skywalk, a suspension bridge, and nighttime landscape lighting. In particular, the nighttime lighting has become a core attraction, encouraging longer stays and transforming Seorak-dong from a mere transit point into a destination for extended visits.
Additionally, the city is accelerating the expansion of tourism infrastructure by promoting a tourism environment improvement project in District B of Seorak-dong. Rest areas are being created on unused land to provide more convenient spaces for visitors, and landscape lighting is being continuously expanded to enhance nighttime tourism content. Based on these efforts, Sokcho City plans to further improve the appeal and comfort of tourism routes connected to Seorak Hyanggi Road.
The remodeling project for the 'Seoraksan Cultural Facility' (formerly the Red Ginseng Experience Center), a core infrastructure for revitalizing tourism in Seorak-dong, is also progressing smoothly. This project aims to transform the aging facility into a complex cultural space. The city plans to complete the exterior remodeling by June this year and finish the interior renovations by the first half of next year, with the goal of opening in the second half of the year.
Through this project, the Seorak-dong area is expected to evolve from a destination focused solely on natural scenery into a complex tourist area where culture, relaxation, and experiences coexist. In particular, by operating various programs linked to local cultural content, the city expects to increase visitor stays and have a positive impact on revitalizing the local economy.
