Extensive Environmental Cleanup Planned for 1,500 Hectares in the Southern Sea Area
Goheung County in South Jeolla Province (Governor Gong Youngmin) announced on April 16 that the southern sea area of Goheung has been selected as the final winner in the "2026 Clean Fishing Ground Regeneration Project" contest hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, securing a total project budget of 5 billion won.
With this selection, Goheung County plans to carry out extensive environmental cleanup activities from 2026 to 2027 over approximately 1,500 hectares in the southern sea area of Goheung, including the removal of accumulated waste and pollutants from the floors of aquaculture grounds.
Goheung County's southern maritime area was finally selected in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' '2026 Clean Fishery Restoration Project' competition, securing a total project cost of 5 billion won. Provided by Goheung County

However, due to prolonged production activities, overcrowding and aging of fishing grounds have led to declining productivity, making urgent measures necessary.
The county plans to invest the secured 5 billion won budget to fundamentally improve the marine environment by collecting and processing contaminated sediments on the sea floor, thereby increasing the productivity of fishing grounds and creating a healthy ecosystem for the sustainable production of marine products.
Goheung County was also selected for the regeneration projects of clean fishing grounds in Deukryangman and Yeojaman in 2021 and 2022, successfully implementing environmental improvement projects over 3,300 hectares with a total budget of 10 billion won until 2024. With this latest selection, the county is expected to establish a systematic marine cleanup system that covers all sea areas of Goheung.
An official from the county's Marine Development Division stated, "This achievement is the result of continuous efforts to restore a healthy marine environment, which was a major pledge of the 8th popularly elected administration," adding, "Through this project, we have gained strong momentum to manage the southern sea area of Goheung more systematically."
