"Dozens Every Time I Used the Ladle"... What Was Found in the Shabu-Shabu Broth Thought to Be 'Just Pepper'
Reporter Says "Reported to Food Ministry, District Office, and Headquarters"
Claims Insects Came from Cabbage Also Raised
There has been a public outcry after claims emerged that dozens of insects were found floating in the broth at a shabu-shabu restaurant visited by a family for dining out.
On April 12, a post was made on a social media platform reporting the discovery of foreign substances in food during a meal out. According to the report, a person identified as Mr. A noticed something floating in the hot pot at a shabu-shabu restaurant he visited to celebrate a family member's birthday.
Mr. A initially thought the floating particles were simply small pieces of pepper or seasoning, but upon closer inspection, he realized they were insects. He said, "Every time I scooped the broth with a ladle, dozens of them came up. Since we had already eaten most of the meal, I felt bloated and nauseous."
Internet users who read the story suggested that the insects had floated up from vegetables such as cabbage. One user commented, "My parents are cabbage farmers and there are quite a lot of those insects near the roots. They're hard to wash off, so you really have to clean the vegetables thoroughly."
If a foreign substance is found in food, it can be a violation of the Food Sanitation Act, going beyond a simple hygiene issue. If intentional or gross negligence is recognized, punishments can include imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to 50 million won. However, in many cases, administrative measures such as business suspension are imposed along with these penalties.
