"1,000-Won Breakfast" Program Expands from Universities to Companies... Gyeongheung Industry in Gyeongju and Kyungdong Navien Cheongdo Plant
Workers Pay 1,000 Won
Gyeongbuk Supports 17 Universities
On February 18, Gyeongbuk Province announced that it will expand the beneficiaries of its ongoing "1,000-Won Breakfast" initiative, which is being promoted to encourage rice consumption and foster healthy eating habits, from university students to industrial complex workers.
This program supports industrial complex workers in the Gyeongbuk region and enrolled university students who have been selected under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' "1,000-Won Breakfast" project, and will run until December 18 this year. Support for industrial complex workers will be implemented as a pilot project for three years starting this year, and within Gyeongbuk Province, Gyeongheung Industry Co., Ltd. (Gyeongju) and the Kyungdong Navien Cheongdo Plant have been selected to receive support. For university students, the number of eligible universities has increased from 16 to 17 with the addition of Gyeongbuk Health College.
The 17 supported universities are Gyeongbuk Health College, Kyungpook National University (main campus and Yecheon campus), Kyungwoon University, Kyungil University, Gumi University, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Gimcheon University, Daegu Catholic University, Daegu University, Daegu Haany University, Dongguk University (Gyeongju), Sunlin University, Yeungnam University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Pohang University, Handong Global University, and Gyeongbuk Health College.
The 1,000-Won Breakfast support program provides rice-based breakfast meals to university students, who have a high rate of skipping breakfast, and to industrial complex workers, who have limited access to food options. The unit cost per meal is around 5,000 won, of which the central government provides 2,000 won, the province and municipalities provide 1,000 won, and the university or company covers 1,000 won, so users only pay 1,000 won for breakfast.
To expand the program, the province has been recruiting additional participating companies through the Food Industry Promotion Agency of Korea since February 2. Through this initiative, the province expects to ease the meal cost burden on students and workers, while contributing to the formation of healthy, rice-centered eating habits and to promoting rice consumption.

Park Chankuk, Director General of the Agricultural, Livestock and Distribution Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, said, "In this era of high prices, the 1,000-Won Breakfast program has been very well received, as it offers high satisfaction to university students and industrial complex workers and provides them with substantial help," adding, "We will do our best to expand support so that it leads both to improved welfare for students and workers and to increased rice consumption."
