Gwangju Urban Railroad Line 2 Temporary Bus Stops Lack Safety and Convenience Facilities
Installed on Sidewalks and in the Middle of the Road
Lack of Basic Facilities Such as Shelters and BIT
Temporary bus stops set up due to construction of Gwangju Urban Railroad Line 2 are causing safety concerns and inconveniencing citizens.
On the morning of the 3rd near the construction site of Phase 1, Section 2 of Gwangju Metro Line 2 in Geumho-dong, Seo-gu, the construction fence was installed right against the road, causing inconvenience for both vehicles and pedestrians. Nearby shops continued their daily operations amid dust and noise. A self-employed business owner operating a store nearby expressed distress, saying, "As the construction drags on, both the customers and my daily motivation are decreasing." Photo by Song Bohyun
View original imageAccording to the Gwangju Urban Railroad Construction Headquarters on November 4, 18 temporary bus stops have been installed in Sections 1 and 2 of the Line 2 construction area, as the original stops have been blocked by the construction sites. Of these, 17 are located on sidewalks, while one has been set up on a steel plate (a temporary plate installed over the construction area to allow vehicles and pedestrians to pass).
However, most of these stops lack basic safety and convenience facilities such as safety fences, protective walls, information boards, and shelters, resulting in inconvenience for citizens.
At 11 of the stops, which have been set up in the form of booths, there are no safety facilities at all, leaving citizens exposed to rain, wind, and cold. Three stops, located in the middle of the road with only an information board, have only the bare minimum facilities such as a bench or a tent. The remaining 13 booth-type stops also have almost no screens or safety fences installed.
There are also five stops (Mudeung Market Entrance, Geumdang Middle School, Yangnim Humansia 2nd Complex, Local Food Museum, and Pungyeongjeong Entrance) that do not have a BIT (Bus Information Terminal) to provide bus arrival information.
As a result, citizens are repeatedly forced to wait near the original stops, where there is shelter from rain and sunlight, and then run to the temporary stops when the bus arrives.
A citizen, identified as Lee, said, "I understand that we can't use the original stops because of the construction, but the temporary stops are right next to the road, which is dangerous," adding, "It is often unsettling because the stops are close to the paths used by construction vehicles."
