Gyeonggi Province to Strengthen Road, Tunnel, and Underpass Safety Management Using AI
Gyeonggi Province will pilot a customized road and tunnel safety management system utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology at two locations within the year to enable more efficient management of road facilities.
Currently, safety management for tunnels and underpasses in the province is conducted at the Tunnel Management Center’s Integrated Control Center using closed-circuit television (CCTV). However, there have been frequent criticisms that it is difficult to visually confirm accidents or delays through the CCTV operated by the Tunnel Management Center.
In response, the Gyeonggi Provincial Construction Headquarters has decided to pilot a customized road and tunnel safety management system using AI technology. By connecting AI programs to existing CCTV, incidents such as underpass flooding and tunnel fires can be immediately transmitted to the management office, enabling prompt emergency response.

The results showed that, in the event of a fire, the AI system instantly detected smoke, displayed the incident on the monitoring screen, and quickly sent out alarms and messages.
However, it was pointed out that the existing CCTV monitoring system needs to be upgraded to effectively respond to the various emergencies that may occur on site.
To actively utilize AI systems tailored to on-site conditions on local roads, Gyeonggi Province will first pilot the system at two underpasses-Cheoncheon and Sookgok in Hwaseong-by the end of this year. Based on further performance and site conditions, the province plans to expand the system to all local road tunnels and underpasses.
