Online Unpacked Event Scheduled for 11 a.m. on the 22nd
Joint Development with Qualcomm and Google
Equipped with "Android XR"
Samsung Electronics will unveil its extended reality (XR) headset, “Project Infinite,” jointly developed with Google and Qualcomm, on October 22. Samsung Electronics and Google plan to accelerate the expansion of the Android XR ecosystem starting with Project Infinite, and Samsung aims to quickly dominate the market by launching smart glasses, scheduled for release next year, after opening up the XR market.
On October 15, Samsung Electronics announced through its Galaxy Event invitation, “At the Samsung Galaxy Event at 11 a.m. on the 22nd, we will introduce a new vision for the era of multimodal artificial intelligence (AI).”
Samsung Electronics also stated, “As a leader in mobile AI, we are opening a new category of AI-native devices,” emphasizing, “Project Infinite is the first product equipped with an open and scalable Android XR.”
The company added, “Android XR is designed to expand across various form factors, bringing AI to the center of immersive everyday experiences. With practical yet novel immersive experiences, the infinite possibilities of XR are now becoming reality.”
Project Infinite is an XR device project developed by Samsung Electronics in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. The product, expected to be named “Galaxy XR,” features the XR-exclusive operating system “Android XR,” co-developed by the three companies, and Google’s AI agent “Gemini.” Users wearing the headset can interact with Gemini and obtain information within the virtual space displayed through the lenses in front of their eyes.
According to the IT industry, Project Infinite is expected to be equipped with Qualcomm’s XR-dedicated application processor, the “Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2” chip. The display will use 4K micro OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels, one for each eye. The resolution reaches 4,032 PPI (pixels per inch), totaling 29 million pixels, which surpasses the 23 million pixels of Apple’s Vision Pro. The industry expects the price of Project Infinite to be in the mid-2 million won range.
Project Infinite is expected to signal the full-scale launch of the Android camp’s XR ecosystem, including Samsung Electronics and Google. There are also predictions that the Android camp will gain an advantage over Apple in the XR competition. This is because the open environment of the Android ecosystem, which allows anyone to participate, can create synergy when combined with Google’s AI capabilities, such as Gemini. Apple, a competitor, released its XR headset “Vision Pro” first in 2023, but it is considered to have failed to gain widespread popularity due to its heavy weight of over 600 grams, small battery capacity, and high price of around 5 million won.
After opening up the XR market with Project Infinite, Samsung Electronics plans to target the market with its smart glasses, tentatively named “Project Coast,” expected to be unveiled next year. These smart glasses are anticipated to weigh 50 grams and be equipped with a 155 mAh (milliampere-hour) battery, making them much lighter than XR headsets currently available on the market. Given that existing XR headsets have struggled to become mainstream due to their heavy weight, there is growing interpretation that lightweight, easy-to-wear smart glasses have a high chance of success.
