The Artistic Spirit Blossoming at the Blade's Edge, Engraved on Woodblocks... 'Gakjajang Sajedonghaeng' Exhibition
Holder of the Gakjang Calligraphy Seal Kim Gakhan and Disciples
Exhibit Works for One Week Starting from the 3rd of Next Month
A venue where various carved inscription (刻字) works can be appreciated will be opened. It is the planned exhibition 'National Intangible Heritage Carved Inscription Masters and Disciples Together,' held by the National Heritage Promotion Agency from the 3rd to the 9th of next month at the National Intangible Heritage Transmission Education Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
This is the fourteenth exhibition featuring Kim Gakhan, the holder of the National Intangible Heritage Carved Inscription Master title, and his disciples. About seventy works created by students of the carved inscription research class at the National Heritage Promotion Agency Lifelong Education Center, professional course graduates, and those who have completed the carved inscription master course under Kim's guidance will be introduced. Works carved by Kim, such as 'Dongjungjeongmangrihan' and 'Seohomanchu,' can also be seen.
Carved inscription is a production technique of engraving letters or pictures on wooden boards. It reached its heyday during the Goryeo Dynasty, centered around temples, as Buddhist scriptures, poems by eminent monks, and literary collections flourished. However, in the late Joseon period, the precision of carving declined, and with the development of metal movable type, the art gradually faded.
An official from the Promotion Agency introduced, "You will be able to feel the artistic spirit of carved inscription masters and the charm of traditional crafts through nameplates and wooden blocks carefully engraved one character at a time with the tip of a knife."
