Xi Jinping tells Ma Ying-jeou, "No foreign force can stop family and national reunification"
Counter Meeting on the Day of the US-Japan Summit
Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly told former Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, who is visiting China, on the 10th that "the compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait all belong to the Chinese nation that created the long-standing and brilliant Chinese civilization."
On that afternoon in Beijing, during a meeting with Ma and the Taiwanese delegation, President Xi emphasized, "The Chinese nation has written an inseparable history on both sides of the Taiwan Strait and engraved the historical fact that compatriots on both sides are connected by blood ties," according to a report by China Central Television (CCTV).
President Xi continued, "The different systems on both sides cannot change the objective fact that both sides belong to the same country," and stressed, "No foreign interference can prevent the historical event of family and homeland reunification." He also said, "Compatriots on both sides are the same Chinese people; there is no knot that cannot be untied and no issue that cannot be discussed," adding that no force can divide us.
Former President Ma Ying-jeou responded, "I sincerely hope that both sides will value the people's values and lifestyles, safeguard peace across the Taiwan Strait, and ensure mutual benefit and coexistence through the wisdom embedded in Chinese culture." He further emphasized, "If war breaks out across the Taiwan Strait, it would impose an unbearable burden on the Chinese nation," and stated, "The Chinese people on both sides have sufficient wisdom to handle cross-strait disputes peacefully and avoid escalating conflicts."

The meeting coincidentally took place on the same day that U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were scheduled to hold a summit in the United States. Earlier, Taiwanese media Liberty Times raised the possibility that the timing of the meeting between President Xi and former President Ma was adjusted from the 8th to the 10th, suggesting that this reflected China's intention to counter the U.S.-Japan summit, where discussions on the Taiwan issue were expected.
