Chicken has already established itself as the 'national snack.' But among Koreans, who orders chicken the most? According to data released by KB Kookmin Card on the 7th ahead of 'Gugu Day (September 9),' it is the young generation in their 20s.
On that day, Kookmin Card analyzed chicken consumption data from its credit and check card members from 2019 to the first half of 2023, distinguishing between in-store and delivery application (app) purchases, revealing these results.
Chicken has long been one of the most popular national snacks among Koreans, but after the COVID-19 pandemic, it solidified its position as a complete trend. The sales of the chicken industry in the first half of 2023 grew by 5.2% compared to the same period last year and by 31.0% compared to the first half of 2019, before the pandemic.
In particular, the growth of delivery apps stood out. The proportion of delivery app sales in the chicken business increased from 13% in the first half of 2019 to 46% in the first half of 2023, a rise of 33 percentage points (p). During the same period, delivery app sales surged by 379%. Delivery apps are now driving the expansion of the chicken market.
The age group that orders chicken the most is people in their 20s, accounting for 26.5% of total sales. They were followed by those in their 40s (25.7%), 30s (24.7%), 50s (16.2%), and 60s (6.9%) in that order.
Top 10% of Members Account for 42% of Total Spending
Chicken appears to be a food with a very large proportion of 'enthusiasts.' The top 10% of members by sales accounted for 41.5% of total spending and 36.9% of the number of transactions. This means that 10% of consumers consume 4 out of every 10 chickens sold nationwide.
These 'chicken enthusiasts' order chicken 34 times a year on average, about 3 times per month. Of these, 2 orders per month were made using delivery apps. Looking at data from the past year, they spent a total of 940,000 KRW, averaging about 80,000 KRW per month on chicken.

This is a significantly higher level than the average. Overall members consumed chicken about 9 times a year on average, spending approximately 230,000 KRW in the past year, or about 20,000 KRW per month. Chicken enthusiasts invest nearly four times more in chicken than the average person.
