On the 5th (Korean time), Im Sung-jae shot 7-under par on the first day of the Wyndham Championship (total prize money $7.3 million), the final regular season event of the 2021/2022 PGA Tour, held at Sedgefield Country Club (par 70, 7,131 yards) in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, to position himself in second place. John Huh led with 9-under par 61, while Peter Malnati and Brandon Wu (both from the USA) are tied for third place at 6-under par 64, engaging in a chase.
Im Sung-jae recorded two eagles, four birdies, and one bogey. Starting at the 10th hole, he warmed up lightly with a birdie at the 11th hole (both par 4), then energized with a 6-meter eagle at the 15th hole (par 5) and consecutive birdies at the 16th and 17th holes. In the back nine, he made a bogey at the 4th hole (par 4) after sending his tee shot into the rough, but showed fierce stamina with a 4.7-meter eagle at the 5th hole (par 5) followed by a birdie at the 6th hole (par 4). His green in regulation rate was 94.44%, and his putts per hole were an outstanding 1.647.
He is two strokes behind the leader, and this is his chance for his second win of the season and third career victory, 10 months after winning the Shriners Children's Open last October. After struggling with missed cuts at the US Open major in June and the Genesis Scottish Open last month, he successfully turned the momentum around by finishing runner-up at the 3M Open, which ended on the 25th of last month. Currently ranked 15th in the FedEx Cup standings, he can jump to 7th if he finishes at this position.
