The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 25th that Minister Noh Hyung-wook visited Egypt from February 23 to 25 to support the winning bid for the Cairo Metro train supply project and discuss ways to expand economic cooperation, including strengthening infrastructure cooperation between the two countries.
This visit was part of the follow-up measures to the $1 billion Korea-Egypt Loan Support Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed during President Moon Jae-in's visit to Egypt in January.
On the 24th, Minister Noh met with Kamel Al-Wazir, Egypt’s Minister of Transportation, to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and financing plans for the additional supply project of trains for Cairo Metro Lines 2 and 3 (320 cars, approximately 784.2 billion KRW).
In particular, the two countries signed the Korea-Egypt Railway Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to broaden the foundation of cooperation through government-to-government (G2G) collaboration and further enhance the competitiveness of Korean companies in securing contracts.
A domestic company that has cooperated on the Cairo Metro Lines 1, 2, and 3 train supply projects worth about 1 trillion KRW since 2012 is expected to increase its competitiveness within Egypt and use Egypt as a foothold to enter the Middle East and Africa regions.
Minister Kamel of Egypt’s Ministry of Transportation stated, "Korea, with its cutting-edge technology, is the optimal partner not only for cooperation in Egypt’s railway sector but also for smart cities and eco-friendly urban development," adding, "We will learn from Korea’s experience in various fields and further develop a mutually beneficial cooperative relationship between the two countries."
