[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] The 4th Industrial Revolution Committee announced that it held a policy forum on online platforms on the 7th at the National Assembly Members' Office Building, together with the National Assembly 4th Industrial Revolution Forum.
On that day, Park Yuri, head of the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) center, who gave a keynote presentation, addressed the current status of the platform industry and conflict issues among stakeholders arising from the emergence of platforms under the theme "The Rise of the Platform Economy and Policy Issues."
Director Park explained, "While considering global regulatory movements regarding platforms, we need to derive platform systems suited to our reality," adding, "For small-scale platforms, tailored support considering platform characteristics such as technology and manpower support is necessary, and for medium-scale platforms, scale-up support is required." She continued, "To resolve conflicts between new and old industries, it is necessary to prepare sufficient and fair consultation venues and seek phased coordination measures rather than business prohibitions," and added, "An inter-ministerial cooperation system should be established to discuss common issues arising from platforms."
Currently, a total of 11 bills are pending in the National Assembly, including the Act on Fairness in Online Platform Intermediary Transactions, the Act on Protection of Online Platform Users, and the Basic Act on Online Platforms.
