Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs "30% Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Livestock Sector by 2030"
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] The government plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the livestock sector by 30% by 2030.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 6th that it has prepared measures to improve the livestock environment in connection with the revised Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for greenhouse gas reduction.
As the greenhouse gas reduction targets for all industrial sectors become more specific, policy supplementation to reduce greenhouse gases in the livestock sector is also necessary. In particular, the main targets in the livestock sector are reducing methane emissions by improving the rumen fermentation environment of ruminants and reducing methane and nitrous oxide through proper treatment of livestock manure. Greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock sector have been increasing from 9.1 million tons (CO2eq) in 2017 to 9.4 million tons in 2018, 9.5 million tons in 2019, and a provisional 9.9 million tons in 2020.
According to the government’s plan, the expected greenhouse gas emissions (BAU) in the livestock sector in 2030 will be reduced from 11 million tons to 7.7 million tons, a 30% reduction. To achieve this, the government will focus on ▲ low-carbon feed management minimizing unnecessary inputs during the breeding process ▲ proper treatment of livestock manure including purification treatment, biochar, and expanded energy utilization ▲ improvement of livestock odor ▲ and establishment of a foundation for livestock environment improvement.
