[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, climbed Mudeungsan Mountain in Gwangju and expressed his determination to achieve more than 20% of the vote share in Honam in the presidential election.
Leader Lee began his ascent of Mudeungsan around 4:30 a.m. on the 2nd and reached Seoseokdae at 7 a.m. to watch the sunrise. At Seoseokdae, he unfolded a small banner with the phrase "Regime Change with the Power of Honam" and prayed, saying, "I hope that in this presidential election, our People Power Party candidate Yoon Seok-yeol will receive more than 20% of the vote, gaining significant support and breaking the regional political structure."
Leader Lee stated, "As we welcome the new year of 2022, the Year of the Black Tiger, we, the People Power Party, will show a different side, and especially, as the 2030 generation has given us much support since 2021, we will challenge new things." He added, "Our goal is to achieve better results particularly in Honam, including Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk. To do so, I climbed Mudeungsan today with the intention of approaching with a humbler attitude, and in two days, I will tour the Dadohae Islands to sincerely communicate our pledges to the residents of Honam."
Earlier, ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, candidate Yoon sent handwritten letters to 2.3 million households in the Honam region. Regarding this, Leader Lee expressed hope that "Yoon’s sincerity toward Honam in this election will fully reach the residents for the sake of political reform in the Republic of Korea."
During his descent from Mudeungsan, Lee met with reporters and said, "Until now, conservative party politicians have limited their visits to Honam to the May 18 Democratic Uprising events. We will visit every corner of Honam, including addressing job issues, to show our sincerity toward Honam in a way different from before." He also mentioned the upcoming tour of the Dadohae sea area starting on the 3rd, stating, "We will begin the process of turning island area complaints and issues into pledges."
On the same day, regarding the collapse accident at an apartment construction site in Hwajeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju, Lee said, "I stated that the People Power Party will also play a role as the opposition regarding incidents occurring in Gwangju. I went to Seoul and spoke with National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee member Song Eon-seok, and we have taken various measures related to Hyundai Development Company as requested by the families of the missing." He added, "We will continue to communicate closely and respond to this accident."

Additionally, concerning the cancellation of the one-on-one debate between Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party and candidate Yoon the previous day, Lee expressed, "We strongly regret that our proposal to hold a higher-quality debate based on materials was rejected." He said, "I believe the party refusing to present various materials, such as those related to the Daejang-dong case, is the guilty party. Candidate Yoon has prepared extensively for the debate and, as seen in the previous primary, approaches debates with confidence."
