[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, commented on the unification between presidential candidates Yoon Seok-yeol and Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party, saying, "It seems that the environment is being prepared to hold the election without unification."
In an interview with TV Chosun's 'News 9' on the 10th, Lee said, "Many people are making political judgments that unification is necessary based on the poll results up to Friday, but looking at the polls after that, (Yoon’s support rate) has significantly recovered among the younger generation."
Lee added, "The poll released today was conducted on Friday and Saturday, mostly on Friday," and said, "Our candidate changed his message from Friday afternoon, so there will be a considerable level of rebound."
He continued, "Unification maximizes its effect when the combined votes have a synergistic effect," and analyzed, "Although Ahn’s support rate has slightly increased, if you look closely, people who originally supported our candidate but recently became disappointed with talent recruitment among the younger generation have left and been added to Ahn’s support base."
He further stated, "When our candidate actively recovers support among the younger generation, the support that flowed to Ahn returns exactly as it was," and predicted, "Therefore, even if unification occurs, it is difficult to achieve a significant effect, and it ends up being a situation where the same group exchanges votes."
When asked if he plans to rebuild the 'anti-Moon Jae-in big tent,' Lee responded, "If it is unclear how much ideological alignment there is with candidates like Ahn or Kim Dong-yeon of the New Wave party and whether they can jointly manage the country, the synergy may be small," adding, "Basically, people with similar intentions should unite in the presidential election, but from the perspective of party members who have devoted themselves to the party, it can be perceived as inappropriate to form an unprincipled alliance with other forces before the election."
Meanwhile, regarding the party atmosphere, Lee said, "Since last weekend, the party has united for the presidential victory, and the atmosphere has greatly revived," indicating that the recent internal conflict has been resolved for now.

Regarding the so-called 'Yoon core group (Yoon candidate’s key associates),' which was cited as the cause of conflict with candidate Yoon, he said, "At least the discomfort in working at the grassroots level has disappeared." He added, "Those people (Yoon core group) are close associates or have close relationships with the candidate, so they can continue to play roles such as political discussions and advising on various decisions, but at least internally over the weekend, it was evaluated that their influence has been removed in situations where the staff need to push work forward quickly."
