Hong Joon-pyo: "A Disgraceful Presidential Election... Reduced to an Elementary School Class President Election"
"I hope the presidential election is conducted like a proper presidential election"
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] On the 10th, Hong Joon-pyo, a member of the People Power Party, harshly criticized the pledge competition between Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Yoon Seok-youl, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, calling it a "low-quality presidential election."
On the same day, Hong posted on Facebook, saying, "The presidential election, which should discuss the nation's long-term future, has degenerated into an elementary school class president election."
He criticized, "'If you vote for me, I will give each of you a pencil,' 'No, I will give each of you a notebook,'" adding, "Why has the presidential election become so low-level, not even like an elementary school class president election?"
He continued, "These days, it is truly disheartening to witness such a low-quality presidential election that makes it embarrassing to face the people," and expressed his hope that "the presidential election would be conducted properly as a presidential election."
Earlier, it was reported that candidate Lee was considering pledges such as nationwide disaster relief funds and applying health insurance coverage to hair loss medication. Candidate Yoon also presented three pledges on Facebook: ▲strengthening punishment for sex crimes and false accusations ▲abolishing the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family ▲raising soldiers' monthly salary to 2 million won. Some criticize these pledges from both major party candidates as "populist pledges."
