PIPC Begins Joint Regulation on Personal Data Protection with Online Shopping Platforms
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The government and online shopping platform operators are joining forces to strengthen personal information protection.
The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced that on the 17th, it held the "Joint Regulation Declaration Ceremony for Strengthening Personal Information Protection in Online Shopping" with nine online shopping platform operators, the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), and the Personal Information Protection Association. The online shopping platform operators participating in this joint regulation declaration included 11st, Naver, Lotte Shopping, eBay Korea, Interpark, Wemakeprice, Kakao, Coupang, and Tmon.
At the event, the PIPC prepared the "Joint Regulation Plan for Strengthening Personal Information Protection in Online Shopping" together with ten leading domestic online shopping platform operators that collect and process large amounts of personal information during the process of connecting buyers to sellers online.
The joint regulation plan includes six items?personal information access control, access logs, encryption, personal information destruction, education, and others?that online shopping platform operators and sellers must comply with. The joint regulation for online platforms means that the government and industry jointly establish and institutionalize the content and methods of safety measures for personal information protection that platform operators and users must follow.
The PIPC plans to finalize the joint regulation plan through future revisions of related notifications, and online shopping platform operators and sellers will improve the construction and operation methods of personal information processing systems according to the government-approved joint regulation. Additionally, the Personal Information Protection Association will conduct education, promotion, and on-site inspections for operators, while the Korea Internet & Security Agency will provide technical support in response to market changes related to the joint regulation.
Yoon Jong-in, Chairperson of the PIPC, said, "The joint regulation declaration ceremony is the first step to clarify the content and methods of safety measures that online shopping operators must comply with, resolving regulatory uncertainties and preventing damage to citizens caused by personal information leaks in advance." He added, "We plan to actively communicate with related industries to promote joint regulations for online platforms in various sectors going forward."
