[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] The Korea Automotive Research Institute is promoting the development of electric multipurpose vehicles (e-PUV) to foster mobility that meets diverse demands such as cargo, personnel transport, firefighting, medical services, and travel.
The Korea Automotive Research Institute announced on the 3rd that it signed a business agreement related to the 'Demand-tailored e-PUV Development Project' with Chungcheongbuk-do, Eumseong-gun, and Chungbuk Technopark at the Grand Plaza Hotel in Cheongju, Chungbuk. Attendees at the signing ceremony included Heo Nam-yong, President of the Korea Automotive Research Institute; Lee Si-jong, Governor of Chungbuk; Cho Byung-ok, Mayor of Eumseong-gun; Song Jae-bin, Director of Chungbuk Technopark; Kim Ik-tae, Head of Kia Special Business Division; and Lim Ho-seon, member of the Democratic Party.
The purpose of this project is to nurture the domestic multipurpose vehicle industry by developing technologies and building infrastructure suitable for the various uses of small electric commercial vehicles whose demand is expanding, and to secure a foothold for global market entry in cooperation with domestic automakers.
Each party will focus on establishing infrastructure for safety evaluation of driving and electric drive modules of multipurpose vehicles, developing platform-specialized technologies for each vehicle, and concentrating on technology development for electric module components such as motors, inverters, batteries, and air conditioning.
To promote the project, the institutions plan to build a multipurpose vehicle safety and reliability evaluation center (tentative name) with a scale of 10,000㎡ on a site of about 30,000㎡ around Daeso JC in Eumseong-gun, Chungbuk, over four years starting from 2023, and to carry out testing and evaluation for each multipurpose platform.
