View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] Former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol officially declared his presidential candidacy on the 29th, breaking his long silence after resigning from his position 118 days ago, sparking mixed evaluations.
Since stepping down from the prosecutor general position on March 4, the lengthy period of silence has led to contrasting reactions, ranging from harsh criticism that he fell short of the accumulated expectations to praise that he represented the public's anger toward the current government. Experts pointed out that Yoon's responses regarding policies lacked specificity.
On the day, Yoon held a press conference at the Maeheon Yun Bong-gil Memorial Hall in Seocho-gu, Seoul, declaring his presidential bid by stating, "I will resolutely reestablish the values of freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and fairness that transcend eras and generations."
He emphasized, "After leaving public office, I met many people. They all consistently worried about the country's future first. They asked if the country could really be like this. Yoon Seok-yeol will stand with those people. I will start from the common sense of the great people who built today's Republic of Korea through industrialization and democratization."
Additionally, Yoon strongly criticized the current administration, saying, "We must achieve a regime change," "We must prevent the extension of power and plundering of the people by corrupt and incompetent forces," and "It is delusional to expect fairness and freedom democracy and innovation from a regime that arrogantly tramples on law and common sense."
Political circles showed divided opinions on Yoon's presidential candidacy announcement. The ruling party launched an offensive, pointing out Yoon's side-to-side head movements.
Jeong Cheong-rae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, mocked Yoon's appearance on Facebook, saying, "I don't know who coached him, but his clumsy gestures, intonation, and awkward content were simply laughable."
He added, "I don't know who taught him, but he only criticized others and endlessly repeated negative words without any positive future vision," and "It was just a clumsy imitation without depth. There was no original content. It was a declaration worth not even 10 won."

There were also opinions that belittled Yoon's preparedness. Park Ju-min, a Democratic Party lawmaker, posted on Facebook, "An hour of non sequiturs and rambling," adding, "Questions were asked on various topics such as economic policy direction, diplomatic issues with Japan, and real estate policy, but I don't remember any meaningful answers from Yoon."
Typically, presidential candidates present broad national governance principles or policy directions at their launch events. However, Yoon did not provide specific policy proposals or directions on various issues in economic and social fields, leading to evaluations that his answers remained at a theoretical level. Ultimately, his vague responses to multiple current issues failed to properly showcase his vision.
Meanwhile, the opposition party praised the press conference, saying, "Yoon delivered a direct blow to the current government." Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, said, "The speech was very refined and reflected deep thought. Many citizens must have felt satisfaction in confirming that the will of the people who desire regime change largely aligns with Yoon's intentions."
Ha Tae-kyung, one of the People Power Party's presidential candidates, also wrote on Facebook, "He struck a stronger blow than expected at the failures and evils of the Moon Jae-in administration," adding, "He emphasized the principles of freedom democracy, fairness and common sense, human rights, and the rule of law, while also focusing on republican values such as the economic foundation for a dignified life, educational opportunities, solidarity, and responsibility. These are exactly the values pursued by the People Power Party."

He accurately pointed out the problems of the current government and ruling party," adding, "His words resonated with me. After watching the speech, I became a fan of Yoon."
However, another netizen commented, "His nervousness was visible. I understand he consulted various experts over three months, but he was still nervous and did not give good answers," and "He seems to need to study more in various areas."
Experts pointed out the lack of specificity in the speech content. Political commentator Lee Jong-hoon said, "A candidate must show a vision when declaring candidacy. However, Yoon's declaration lacked that," adding, "There was no mention of the much-anticipated party entry issue or the future primary race structure. He was in a position to lead the game but responded passively."
