Kakao Commerce Joins Efforts to Address Climate Change
[Asia Economy, reporter Bae Ari] Kakao Commerce announced on June 4 that it will participate in addressing climate change in recognition of World Environment Day.
Kakao Commerce stated, "We define this new climate action as a 'heartwarming gift for people and the planet,' and we will establish an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) framework."
Kakao Commerce will make donations within Korea, focusing on voluntary carbon emission reduction, development of eco-friendly products, improvement of packaging materials, and participation in forest creation projects. The company plans to implement detailed measures by applying eco-friendly practices across all of its services.
To manage and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Kakao Commerce selected this year's greenhouse gas emissions from its business sites and prepared a report. Starting with converting the packaging materials of products directly launched by Kakao Commerce, the company plans to expand its lineup of eco-friendly products offered through its gifting, shopping, and Makers services.
For Kakao Friends products, starting this month, the company will gradually switch shipping boxes, packaging materials, and cushioning materials to eco-friendly alternatives. Beginning next month, all packaging and supplementary materials used in the Kakao Friends online mall will be replaced with eco-friendly products. The company explained, "Through these measures, we expect to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 32 tons per year, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed annually by approximately 5,000 30-year-old pine trees."
In the future, Kakao Commerce plans to create dedicated spaces to display products that are either eco-certified or environmentally conscious through its gifting and shopping services, and will support small sellers in adopting eco-friendly practices.
Kakao Commerce will also participate in projects to restore natural ecosystems, including creating forests within local communities. Forest creation is one of the most effective ways to address climate change. Last month, Kakao Commerce planted about 10,000 trees in Munjeong-dong, Seoul, establishing the 'Kakao Commerce Songpa Dullegil.'
