Utilizing Drones and Unmanned Robots for Large Vessel Inspections
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 30th that it will apply a new "Guidelines for Ship Inspection Using Remote Inspection Equipment" from May 1, allowing ship inspections using advanced equipment such as drones and unmanned robots.
The new guidelines include detailed procedures and methods such as types of remote inspection equipment, scope of application, inspection preparation and implementation methods, and preparation of inspection result reports.
The Ministry expects that using remote inspection equipment will significantly reduce time and costs, as inspections can be completed within a day at a cost of about 5 million won.

Previously, inspecting a large 150,000-ton bulk cargo ship required personnel to climb into cargo holds as deep as 20 meters to perform the work. This involved installing scaffolding or calling in high-rise ladder vehicles over 2 to 3 days at a cost of about 10 million won, resulting in significant expenses and time consumption.
