Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Recalls Over 238,000 Vehicles of 39 Models Including BMW
[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 1st that a total of 238,914 vehicles across 39 models manufactured or imported and sold by BMW Korea, Hyundai Motor Company, Kia Motors, Ford Sales Service Korea, and FCA Korea have been found to have manufacturing defects and will undergo corrective action (recall).
A total of 221,172 vehicles across 31 models, including the BMW 520d imported and sold by BMW Korea, have been subject to an additional recall as cracks were identified in some of the improved Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) coolers produced since 2017, as a proactive measure to prevent fires.
For vehicles that have not yet had their EGR coolers replaced and are at high risk of coolant leakage, totaling 107,731 units, the EGR coolers will be replaced. For 113,441 vehicles equipped with recently produced EGR coolers, inspections will be conducted to check for any abnormalities in the parts, and replacements will be made if necessary. Considering the EGR production dates, these vehicles can receive free repairs (part replacement or inspection followed by replacement) at official BMW Korea service centers starting from the 5th, in phases.
A total of 2,473 vehicles across 4 models including the G80, manufactured and sold by Hyundai and Kia Motors, have been found to have a possibility of fuel leakage and subsequent fire due to manufacturing defects in the high-pressure fuel pipe connections. Additionally, 12,119 units of the G70 have been found to have a risk of fire caused by internal short circuits in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU*). These vehicles will undergo corrective action (recall). Repairs (inspection followed by replacement and installation of improved fuses) have been carried out free of charge at Hyundai Motor Company’s direct service centers and Bluehands, as well as Kia Motors service centers, since the 29th for the 4 models including the G80, and since the 31st for the G70.
A total of 2,790 vehicles across 2 models, the Taurus and Explorer, imported and sold by Ford Sales Service Korea, have been found to have insufficient rigidity in the bracket that secures the axle transmitting power to the front wheels, which could lead to breakage and accidents during driving. These vehicles can receive free repairs (inspection followed by replacement) at official Ford Sales Service Korea service centers starting from the 2nd.
A total of 360 units of the 300C imported and sold by FCA Korea have been found to have a manufacturing defect in the crankshaft tone wheel, causing inaccurate transmission of engine RPM information and a possibility of engine stalling while driving. These vehicles will undergo corrective action (recall).
These vehicles can receive free repairs (replacement with improved parts) at official FCA Korea service centers starting from the 6th.
