Renault Samsung Tangled in Issues... CEO and Union Meeting
Dominic Signora, President, to Meet with Union in Busan on the 23rd
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Dominic Signora, President of Renault Samsung Motors, will meet with the labor union to discuss current issues. This comes amid a tangled situation in labor-management relations, including changes to the work system and wage and collective bargaining negotiations that have extended beyond the expected timeline. Industry insiders view this meeting as a potential turning point for future labor-management relations.
According to industry sources on the 22nd, President Signora will visit the Busan plant in Gangseo-gu, Busan, on the morning of the 23rd to hold talks with union officials, including Union Chairman Park Jong-gyu. The union has consistently demanded a meeting with the company's CEO to resolve various pending issues.
President Signora's direct engagement with the union comes as discussions at the Employment Stability Committee regarding changes to the work system have made little progress. Since the 16th, Renault Samsung has been implementing a change from the current two-shift system with an hourly production rate (UPH) of 45 units to a single daytime shift with 60 UPH, effective until May 30. Approximately 270 surplus workers resulting from this change are also undergoing rotational leave.
The union is opposing this change in the work system, stating it is unacceptable. The union insists on maintaining the two-shift system with 40 UPH and applying an alternating system of workers' annual leave and paid leave by management on non-operational days.
Despite the conflict between labor and management, Renault Samsung is attempting to streamline operations due to a deteriorating business environment. Last year, Renault Samsung's production volume dropped 31.5% year-on-year to 112,171 units. This decline followed the end of Nissan Rogue's contract production (100,000 units annually) and continued domestic market stagnation. The outlook for this year is also bleak. Renault Samsung previously lowered its annual production target from 157,000 units to 100,000 units, a roughly 40% reduction. This is the direct reason management is pushing for changes to the work system.

Industry insiders see this meeting as a potential watershed moment in Renault Samsung's labor-management conflict. An industry official pointed out, "The French Renault headquarters has repeatedly expressed negative views about Renault Samsung due to recurring labor issues," adding, "If Renault Samsung cannot resolve its complicated labor relations, there is a high possibility that the European supply of the XM3 model will be diverted to other regions after next year."
