North Korea's Rice Cultivation Area 540,697 ha, Down 2.9% YoY... 74% of South Korea's Level
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] According to a survey conducted by Statistics Korea using satellite imagery, North Korea's rice cultivation area was found to be 540,697 hectares, which is 74% of South Korea's area.
Statistics Korea announced the "2020 North Korea Rice Cultivation Area Survey Results" containing this information. Due to the increasing demand for North Korean statistics, Statistics Korea conducted the first survey of rice cultivation areas in North Korea last year. Using satellite imagery, they created land boundary maps for sample survey units (15,470 units) and interpreted the captured satellite images.
The survey results showed that North Korea's rice cultivation area was 540,697 hectares, a 2.9% decrease compared to the previous year (557,016 hectares). Statistics Korea analyzed that the decrease in cultivation area was due to adverse weather conditions such as heavy rains and typhoons during the growing season (July to September).
