The Smart Green City Project is part of the government's Green New Deal initiatives, aiming to "restore the green ecosystem of cities" by supporting environmental improvement projects in various fields such as climate, water, air, and resource circulation.
For the "Comprehensive Leading Type" support, which combines three or more environmental sector projects for the city's "green transition," five locations were selected: Hwaseong-si in Gyeonggi, Jeonju-si in Jeonbuk, Gangjin-gun in Jeonnam, Sangju-si in Gyeongbuk, and Gimhae-si in Gyeongnam.
The "Problem Solving Type" support, focusing on solving local environmental issues by combining two or more projects, includes 20 locations nationwide, including Bucheon-si in Gyeonggi.
In the Smart Green City Project public contest conducted by the Ministry of Environment from September to November, 100 local governments applied, recording a high competition rate of 4 to 1.
The Smart Green City Project will be carried out over two years starting next year, with a total project budget of 290 billion KRW (170 billion KRW from the central government and 120 billion KRW from local governments).
