Construction of Over 28 Million Data Records Related to 500+ Medicinal Herbs Announced by MFDS
[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] Over 28 million data entries on medicinal biological resources found in daily life have been made publicly available. Not only the efficacy of medicinal materials but also precautions can be easily accessed by the general public.
The Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine completed the establishment of a forest big data platform (center) on the 26th and opened it to the public. By accessing this platform, various information on about 541 species of medicinal biological resources announced by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety can be obtained. Regarding medicinal biological resources, six types of information can be identified: medicinal biological resource information, classical literature medicinal biological resource information, forest medicinal biological resource information, component information, protein information, and medicinal biological resource utilization information. It is notable that data on the location, price, and use as well-being food of medicinal biological resources can also be found.
The Institute of Oriental Medicine established the medicinal biological resource big data infrastructure last year and is conducting research to produce and trade data by next year. The data released this time amounts to a total of over 28 million entries. The scale reaches approximately 90GB (gigabytes). The institute highlighted that the information is processed in an easy-to-understand manner for the general public. The institute plans to release an additional 15 million data entries by next year.
Data produced and processed at the Medicinal Biological Resource Big Data Center can be freely downloaded from the Forest Big Data Platform Exchange or the Medicinal Biological Resource Big Data Center website.
