Full-Scale Urban Regeneration Begins in the Declined Songjeong-dong Area, Seongdong-gu, Seoul
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The urban regeneration project in the Songjeong-dong area of Seongdong-gu, Seoul is set to kick off in earnest.
Seoul City announced on the 18th that it held an Urban Regeneration Committee meeting on the 17th and approved the revised Songjeong-dong Urban Regeneration Activation Plan.
Songjeong-dong is a declining area due to complex factors such as cultural and social conditions and physical status. After strengthening resident capabilities through the Urban Regeneration Hope Site Project from 2017 to 2018, it was selected as an Urban Regeneration Activation Area in September 2018. Since then, the Urban Regeneration Activation Plan was prepared through various resident opinion collection processes such as surveys, workshops, and public hearings, as well as expert consultations and coordination with related organizations.
Additionally, the recent Urban Regeneration Committee review included advice on the Songjeong-dong Remodeling Activation Plan, which is expected to further promote home repair projects for aging houses.

Yang Yong-taek, Director of Regeneration Policy Planning, stated, “Through the announcement of the Urban Regeneration Activation Plan reflecting the local characteristics of Songjeong-dong’s low-rise residential area surrounded by arterial roads and Jungnangcheon, including the Songjeong embankment and alleyways, we plan to promote full-scale urban regeneration projects for each unit project. We will continue to make efforts to ensure smooth progress of urban regeneration projects by establishing governance together with residents and the public.”
