Yoon Mi-hyang's 'Wine Gathering' Coincides with Gil Halmeoni's Birthday
According to the Jeongui Memory Solidarity website, both 2019 and 2018 Gil Halmeoni birthday parties were on 'Lunar October 23'
However, last year's post said "91st birthday"... Yoon Mee-hyang's explanation said "Gil Won-ok Halmeoni's 94th birthday"
Kim Geun-sik criticized "Age is wrong and birthday party without the person involved"
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] As the government is considering the third level of 'social distancing,' controversy has arisen over Rep. Yoon Mi-hyang of the Democratic Party of Korea holding a 'wine gathering.' Some have raised suspicions that Rep. Yoon falsely explained her birthday party as that of Grandma Gil.
Spokesperson Kim Eun-hye commented on the 13th, saying, "Do we have to hear such news and make the public furious?" and sarcastically added, "As the former head of Justice Memory Solidarity (Jeonguiyeon), once called the financial source of the activist group, it seems Rep. Yoon's party is still not over." Floor spokesperson Bae Hyun-jin also criticized Rep. Yoon for mentioning Grandma Gil Won-ok, stating, "Rep. Yoon has been indicted on quasi-fraud charges for embezzling donations meant for comfort women victims with dementia symptoms, and the victim in question is Grandma Gil," and claimed, "It appears she mocked the grandmother out of frustration over the trial."
Some have also raised suspicions that Rep. Yoon's birthday recorded on internet portal sites as October 23 converts to December 7, implying that the day was Rep. Yoon's birthday, not Grandma Gil's. However, Justice Memory Solidarity posted related photos on their website after holding Grandma Gil's birthday party on November 19 last year and November 30, 2018. Both dates correspond to the lunar calendar date of October 23.
However, the banner at last year's birthday party for Grandma Gil posted by Justice Memory Solidarity read, "Grandma Gil Won-ok's 91st birthday party," and the 2018 post said, "Congratulations on Grandma Gil Won-ok's 90th birthday!" In response, Kim Geun-sik, the People Power Party Songpa-byeong district committee chairman, criticized Rep. Yoon for stating Grandma Gil's age as 94, saying, "It's one thing to get Grandma Gil's age wrong, but is there any case in the world where people gather to celebrate without the birthday person? It is truly despicable to lie that it was Grandma Gil's birthday party just to avoid criticism."
Meanwhile, as the controversy spread, Rep. Yoon deleted the post and posted an apology, saying, "I sincerely apologize for the thoughtlessness during the serious crisis of COVID-19." She added, "Monday, December 7, was Grandma Gil Won-ok's 94th birthday. However, I have not been able to contact her and could not meet to offer congratulations," and continued, "Sharing sadness and longing at a meal with acquaintances was an inconsiderate act."
