Assemblyman Jo Seung-rae: "Mobile carriers must actively step up to offer revolutionary rate plans"
Assemblyman Cho's Statement on Household Communication Cost Reduction
"Telecom Companies and Government Should Actively Reduce Household Communication Costs"
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Cho Seung-rae, the spokesperson of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Communications Committee and a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, urged mobile carriers and the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 11th to cooperate, stating, "We will accelerate the reduction of household communication costs."
In a statement released that day, Rep. Cho said, "We will prioritize lowering communication fees and do our best to achieve tangible results that the public can feel," adding, "The public is waiting for a revolutionary rate plan to ease the burden of communication costs. We expect the Ministry of Science and ICT to actively respond to the efforts of the three mobile carriers."
Rep. Cho said, "During the National Assembly's discussion on abolishing the rate approval system, there were significant concerns that expanding the carriers' autonomy over rate plans would lead to increased communication fees. I urge the three mobile carriers to actively work on reducing communication costs to dispel public concerns and gain trust."
He added, "The reassignment of the 310 MHz frequency, scheduled to end in June 2021, was recently finalized, and the government has settled the reassignment fee at a minimum of 3.17 trillion won over five years based on 5G wireless station construction performance," explaining, "This is the result of mutual concessions and compromises between the government's initial claim of 4.4 trillion won and the three mobile carriers' claim of 1.6 trillion won."
He said, "Following the world's first commercialization, the 2022 nationwide 5G network construction for the world's best communication infrastructure can proceed without setbacks. I highly appreciate the government's reassignment decision and communication, as well as the active cooperation of the three mobile carriers."
